Disability waiting list mustn't return
There was cause for celebration only a few short months ago, when the state's waiting list for people who qualify for services for the developmentally disabled was finally eliminated. But the joy was short-lived and replaced by trepidation.

Workers arrested kept jobs at Texas state schools
Employees at state-run centers who were arrested for felonies such as child rape and murder continued on the payroll to care for the mentally disabled, according to criminal fingerprint checks.

Report: State facility for people with disabilities lacks psychiatrists, trained therapists
Nine months after Texas and the U.S. Department of Justice entered into a settlement to improve health care and more quickly investigate reports of abuse and neglect at state institutions for people with mental disabilities, the facility in Corpus Christi doesn't have staff psychiatrists, has therapists who are ill-equipped to work with people with complex needs and doesn't have a clear zero-tolerance policy for abuse and neglect.

N.J. Gov. Chris Christie pledges to restore $2M to move disabled to new housing
The Christie administration today pledged to restore a $2 million budget cut made last month, paving the way for 14 people with developmental disabilities who were waiting to leave institutional care for community housing to relocate as soon as possible, a state official confirmed.

Many disability advocates claim the state has made some unlawful budget cuts to some of its most vulnerable people. Attorneys for Interhab, a company that provides in home developmental disability service, filed a petition Friday to reverse the cuts made by the state. More than 2,000 children and adults with disabilities are affected by the $10 million that was taken away.

When special needs students reach the age of 21, their education and therapy services as mandated by federal law cease. The process is called “aging out.” The Individual Disability Education Act guarantees free appropriate education, including therapies as needed, from ages 3 to 21.
