Education Department Bureaucracy Keeps Disabled Borrowers in Debt
Tina Brooks can't sit or stand for more than half an hour before the pain in her lower back becomes intolerable. She suffers severe headaches and memory loss, and she has lost most of the vision in her left eye. Five doctors and a judge from the Social Security Administration have all determined that she is fully disabled and unable to work.

Elite charter school under probe again
For the second time in four years the state is investigating the enrollment process of the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology after complaints the elite charter school illegally screened applicants.

Sidewalks are made without curbs at the corners and laws prohibit putting up new buildings that are not accessible to everyone. We are now aware of the extra-large stalls in bathrooms and parking for people with disabilities in every mall. We take these improvements for granted now.

Kathleen Nosek, the Sheffield special-ed teach whose grievance I've been writing about, was suspended with pay this afternoon as a direct result of my visit to her classroom on Tuesday. I filed the story tonight and you can read it in today's paper.

Seventeen-year-old Mead High School student Benjy Migliuri recently returned from a visit to the University of Washington. While it’s not unusual for high school seniors to tour prospective colleges, Migliuri’s 10-day stay was unique and one he’d never dreamed possible.

Paul K. Longmore dies at 64; leading disability scholar and activist
Unable to use his hands because of a childhood bout with polio, Paul K. Longmore wrote his first book by punching a keyboard with a pen he held in his mouth. It took him 10 years, and when he was done, he burned a copy in front of the Federal Building downtown.
